Chris Murray at Canteen Brewhouse

 Chris Murray at Canteen Brewhouse

We Do The Ska!!!

It's been a little over a year and I'm excited to say that Chris Murray will be returning September 10th to The Canteen Brewhouse!! If you haven't had the chance to catch Chris live this is your chance Albuquerque. There is NO COVER and it's open to the public.  RSVP on links above or here.

Chris Murray

Chris Murray is a unique force on today’s music scene. Born in Toronto, he earned a strong reputation as a dynamic performer and gifted songwriter as leader of influential Canadian ska group King Apparatus. Upon the band’s breakup, he relocated to Los Angeles, emerging as a solo artist with The 4-Track Adventures Of Venice Shoreline Chris, recorded in various locations on a portable 4-track cassette recorder.
Entering LA’s ultra-purist rock steady scene armed only with an acoustic guitar, Chris has become a leading figure in the world’s foremost authentic Jamaican music community. As host of Bluebeat Lounge (2003-2009), a popular weekly concert series focusing on reggae and ska, Chris promoted more than 350 shows over seven years at Hollywood’s Knitting Factory.
Life has led Chris down a musical path to the very roots of reggae music. From trading songs on acoustic guitar with boogie-ska pioneer Laurel Aitken and singing with famed bandleader Carlos Malcom, to jamming with The Specials in a basement club and recording with Jamaica’s original rhythm section, Lloyd Knibb and Lloyd Brevett, Chris has served his apprenticeship with the finest musicians associated with the genre. He has also performed with backing groups for such legendary Jamaican artists as Rico Rodriguez, Leonard Dillon (The Ethiopians), Eric Morris and Prince Buster.
His album Slackness was recorded with NYC stalwarts The Slackers. He is co-writer of the Hepcat classic, “I Can’t Wait”. His group, Chris Murray Combo, has performed at Fuji Rock Festival. He has collaborated with countless talented musicians from around the globe, and become a legendary artist in the contemporary international rock steady scene.
His musical journeys have taken him throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, the UK, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Morocco.

Whiskey Avengers - Live

I had the great pleasure to get to hear these guys a few years back off a compilation CD my friend Larry made of all their albums in Albuquerque.  Fast forward to last weekend, I was on tour with Radio la Chusma and we had a day off Easter Sunday/420 and we were in Ocean Beach, I was coming off a pretty sick hangover from the night before and was in need of a cold one.  Tower 2 was the closest bar I could see and it so happened they had live music on Sunday's, I was with a few of the guys in Chusma and they were starving so we walked in, I ordered a beer and fish taco (had a budget to stick to!) made a run to the head and BOOM flyer for Whiskey Avengers playing at 4:20 FOR FREE!!!

Wasn't that difficult to stick around and hear a few songs.  I introduced myself after they finished setting up and turned out we had a lot of mutual friends.  RLC was staying with Double A from Warsaw Poland Bros in North Park and the guys from Whiskey Avengers (Clint, Stefan and Kevin) have known him for a while and it so happened the rhythm section was going to lay down some music with him later on that night at The Gaslamp.  Things would take on a more epic turn of events when after I heard a few songs we had a BBQ at Double A's and the guys showed up ate, drank a few beers and what not then Aaron asked me to come sit in on a few songs!  I think a couple of the guys in Chusma overheard and joined in on the jam session so we had Charly Chanclas and Jake come with and we piled into the van and headed down to The Gaslamp.

I had a few drinks pretty much all day but overall I think I held my own with such heavy's, Clint and Kevin laid down some pretty dope rhythm behind Aaron, be it rockabilly, rock, ska, rocksteady, straight up reggae or even some exploratory jam that happened after a few more beers and a shot I think... things got blurry near the end of the night but it was a hell of a jam!  Anyways, here are some shots of the guys performing at Tower 2!  Check out their facebook page and give them a like as well!

Stem Beach Soul Revival - Pueblo Rocksteady/Soul

Was finally able to pull off some video files and figure out how to read .MOD files in iMovie so I'll be posting up more videos on my blog and trying to remember all the footage...

Without further ado this is from way back in October when I was on tour with Radio la Chusma and we did a short run up in Colorado.  We were fortunate enough to be holed up in lovely Buelah, CO for a few days and played at The Songbird CafĂ©.  Great time with free keg beer and this great upcoming band from Pueblo.

Stem Beach Soul Revival plays old school reggae/rocksteady/soul music with a style crossed between The Aggrolites and Amy Winehouse.

La Santa Cecilia live at Korova

Named for the patron saint of musicians, La Santa Cecilia has deep roots in the immigrant community of Los Angeles. Yet the band's six members draw inspiration not only from their rich heritage, but also from their everyday lives growing up embedded in American culture. (check out a great interview on NPR)

Had the privilege to hear them in San Antonio at The Korova a few weeks back when I was playing with Radio la Chusma, These guys & girls are definitely worth hitting up iTunes, Amazon or where ever their music is sold digitally or if you happen to see them live I’d BUY a CD & TSHIRT! visit them at www.lasantacecilia.com

Fixed Idea's 20 Year Anniversary Show - Part 1

This past weekend was Fixed Idea's 20 year anniversary show at Tricky Falls.  I posted up a few photos on my facebook page that you can check out if you like.  I'll do a brief summary of the show because I only remember bits n' pieces of it (tequila is a helluva drug).

Mexklan opened the night with some great ska/rocksteady/jazz fusion mixed into their set.  The majority of their members played in Fixed Idea from 2000-2010 (Jaime/Bass, Rick/Drums, Mario/Keys, Maribel/Sax, Matt/Trumpet with addition of Louie/Guitar) Horn section is tight as hell and Louie murders it on guitar.  Jaime & Rick are probably the best rhythm section in the city hands down and Mario can throw some reggae bubbles like the best of them.

Radio la Chusma came up afterwards and with a few minor line up changes, David was in California with his family most notably the absence of Selina Nevarez, who left after 5 great years in RLC.  Set was energetic had the crowd dancing and played the Chusma Standards, Cumbia de Maracumbe, Rasta Mexica & of course Crusin'.  Didn't take any footage of the set because (hint I play trombone in Chusma) SOOO hopefully we get to see some photos and videos soon!

Fixed Idea was in full force with over 20 people on stage throughout their set and playing all the classics which are too many to name but they put on a hell of a show lot of familiar faces on stage and by that point into their 4th song I was a few lone stars and tequila shots in and things got hazy BUT I did manage to take a few video's SO ENJOY :)
